Hockey & Figure Skate Hollow Guide for Utah Ice: Standard vs. Fire Rings

Ask ten hockey players or figure skaters in Salt Lake County what sharpening hollow they skate on, and half will admit they just accept the rink default. Yet moving just 1/16th of an inch shallower—or switching to a flat-bottom Fire ring on our Sparx PS300—can take noticeable strain off your legs while keeping rock-solid edge hold in tight turns.

Inside the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns, UT, our technicians sharpen hundreds of hockey and figure skates every month on high-altitude, fast, dense ice. Here is how to dial in your exact Radius of Hollow (ROH).

How Radius of Hollow (ROH) Works

Hockey and figure skate blades are ground with a concave groove down the center of the steel, creating an inside and outside edge. A smaller fraction (like 3/8" or 7/16") cuts a deeper groove for sharper bite and quicker stops at the cost of extra drag. A larger fraction (like 5/8" or 3/4") cuts a shallower groove that skims on top of the ice for higher top-end glide and smoother transitions.

Traditional Hollows vs. Sparx Fire (Flat-Bottom) Rings

Traditional grinding rings shape a curved arc between your two edges. Sparx Fire rings grind a micro-flat plateau across the center with crisp angled side walls—delivering the straight-line glide efficiency of a shallower hollow with the cornering bite of a deeper cut:

Recommended Hockey & Figure Skate Hollows for Salt Lake Valley Ice
Ring / Hollow Profile Type Feel on Utah Ice Recommended Skater
3/8" & 7/16" Deep Traditional Aggressive bite; highest stopping grip Lightweight youth hockey players (< 125 lbs) on hard winter sheets
1/2" Balanced Traditional Predictable all-around bite & glide Standard baseline for youth/adult hockey & freestyle figure jumps
9/16" & 5/8" Shallow Traditional Fast glide, crisp punch turns, less leg burn Teen/adult hockey players (160+ lbs), defensemen & figure ice dancers
1/2" Fire Flat-Bottom Hybrid Bites like 1/2" in corners; glides like 5/8" Travel & high school hockey forwards/defensemen seeking extra speed
5/8" Fire Shallow Flat-Bottom Maximum effortless glide over 3 periods Strong adult skaters (185+ lbs) & tournament schedules

Why Hand Deburring & Bench Stone Care Matter

Even the cleanest Sparx PS300 pass leaves a microscopic wire burr on the outside of the steel. Never let anyone “cross-swipe” a gummy stone over the hollow groove! At Salty Gold, every sharpening is finished completely flat along the side wall using our precision-machined Salty Gold Hockey Pro Burr Diamond Plate. Keeping one in your hockey bag also lets you rescue a blown edge after stepping on a goal post between shifts in two flat strokes.

Special Care for Figure Skates

Figure blades carry specialized spin rockers and drag toe picks that are permanently ruined if an inexperienced operator grinds into the bottom pick. Our Oval technicians set stop-points carefully on Jackson Ultima, MK, and John Wilson blades so your spin sweet spot and toe picks stay intact.
